James Tellen was born in 1880 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and lived there his entire life. He was a carpenter by trade and never received any formal art training. In the 1920s, he began creating sculptures from cement, which he would then cover in mosaics made from broken bottles, shells, and other found objects.

Over the years, Tellen created over 30 sculptures, which he placed throughout his property. He called it "The Garden of the Gods" and it quickly became a local attraction. After his death in 1957, the garden fell into disrepair.
